Join visiting artist, Gretchen Schermerhorn, and learn how to make a clay-resist paste, print and paint with it on fabric, and overdye your work with organic indigo. The morning will be spent learning how to mix the resist paste and exploring the various, inventive methods of applying it. This will include block-printing, stenciling, and direct painting. The afternoon will be spent dyeing with time for multiple dips and layers.
Learn how to build up patterns and imagery with an additional resist to create varying shades of beautiful indigo blue. At the end of class, each student will leave with their samples, recipes, and trade secrets to continue developing the techniques at home. While you're here, don't forget to check out Gretchen's work in the On Paper exhibit, now showing in the mezzanine gallery!
Participants should bring your own natural fabrics (cotton, linen, or silk) to work with. Cotton tea towels or handkerchiefs work great for this process. Bring your own smock or apron. A $5 materials fee will be due to the instructor at class for use of her dyes and resist supplies. Pack a lunch to enjoy a picnic in the park, or grab a meal from the food truck on site ( available 4pm-7pm).
Due to COVID safety guidelines, all participants must wear a mask (up and over nose!) while in class. Class will be outdoors, so dress according to weather.
